MELAKA: A total of 4.89 million tourists, 21 per cent of them from abroad, visited Melaka as of June this year, said state Tourism, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Seet Har Cheow.
He said the figure was encouraging in the state's endeavour to achieve its target of getting 8.2 tourists by the end of this year compared to 8.9 million last year, of which 18 per cent from abroad.
He said most of foreign tourists, who visited Melaka, were from Singapore, China, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Tourist arrivals in Melaka will increase dramatically if there are more direct flights between Melaka and other countries, he said, adding that the state government was holding discussions with Chinese and Thai authorities on the proposed direct flights between Melaka and Nanjing and Melaka and Hadyai.
He said the upgrading work of refuelling facilities at the Melaka International Airport would be completed in December to enable it to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 737.
The upgraded airport will be a catalyst to the Melaka tourism industry, he told reporters after delivering a speech before the breaking of fast with the media and orphanages organised the Melaka chapter of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents in Ayer Keroh here last night.
On anti-Malaysia protests in Jakarta, he said it had not affected tourist arrivals from Indonesia and Malaysians visiting the republic from the state

SINGAPORE, August 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysians have voted Australia, Taiwan and China as their top three desirable holiday destinations in the Asia Pacific region, according to a survey by Visa and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) released here Wednesday.
The Asia Pacific Travel Intentions Survey 2010 showed that 16 per cent of the Malaysian respondents chose Australia as their main choice destination, another 12 per cent picked Taiwan and 11 per cent named China.
Overall, the survey revealed that 40 per cent of the 6,714 respondents surveyed in this year's research said they would consider travelling to Australia or Japan in the next two years.
When asked to name the most likely destination for their next Asia Pacific holiday, 17 per cent named Australia as their top destination while 16 per cent named Japan.
The survey asked respondents from 13 key Asia Pacific travel source markets (Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Japan, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States) about past and future travel plans.
The survey also revealed that almost half of all those surveyed (47 per cent) said they arranged their trips themselves by booking directly with hotels and airlines.
Most travellers spent three to five nights on vacation, with 32 per cent of respondents saying this was how long they had been away on average over the last two years.
Most travellers tend to holiday with their spouse or partner, with 48 per cent saying they had done so on their travels over the last two years.

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Sabah registered an eight per cent increase in tourist arrivals in the first six months of this year, recording 1,195,168 arrivals compared to 1,104,903 in the same period last year.
International tourist arrivals recorded a higher growth of 23.5 per cent (372,672 arrivals) while domestic arrivals only grew at 2.4 per cent (822,496 arrivals), said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun.
"International arrivals by air increased by 15 per cent but if we count Indonesians and Filipinos arriving by boat/ferry, it will be 23.5 per cent. We also noted that there was a good increase of Indonesians and Filipinos arriving by air, with arrivals by air from the Philippines increasing by 40 per cent and Indonesian arrivals by air increasing by 38 per cent for the first six months," he told reporters after opening the Sabah Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair on Friday.
Masidi said this was also attributed to the increased number of flights between Manila and Kota Kinabalu, and with more high-end Indonesians visiting the state. There was also a notable increase in tourists from Europe and Taiwan, he added.
In the meantime, he said, the low growth in domestic tourism could be attributed to tourists still being cautious over the economic situation.
"Nevertheless, we hope the recent announcement by Malaysia Airlines to select Kota Kinabalu as its eastern hub will contribute to more active tourism activities in Sabah," he said, adding that new direct routes were expected, such as to Perth, Australia.
Earlier, in his speech, Masidi reminded travel agents and tour operators here to be honest when doing business to ensure that Sabah's image was kept clean and said they would benefit through repeat customers in the long term. Masidi claimed that almost 90 per cent of the complaints received from international tourists was that they had been cheated or they did not get what they were promised, such as no refund if they cancelled their trip.
"We will not tolerate cheats. We will come after you. We will not hesitate to recommend the cancellation of your licence if you feel you need to cheat," he warned.
The MATTA Fair, which will be on until Sunday, showcases 50 booths consisting of travel operators, national tourism organisations and state tourism organisations, where more than 30 per cent are promoting domestic tourism, said Sabah chapter MATTA chairman cum organising chairman K.L Tan.
MATTA Malaysia president Datuk Khalid Harun said this was the seventh MATTA fair held this year out of the 12 fairs scheduled annually, and they tried to arrange one fair in a different state every month.
